June 23 Canon City - LayoverToday is a rest day but in true adventure cycling spirit we did something different. White water rafting. I thought as the bus took us out to the river that the ride would be quite tame, after all the general public are not really fit and these guys never even asked us if we could swim in the event of falling into the river. Life jackets on and into the rubber boat the two boats took off. Within a mile the attitude changed BIG TIME. This was exciting stuff and I can tell you it had me more than a little scarred. The ride look us down the Arkansas river thru the Royal Gorge. The gorge has a bridge over it at the point where it's about 1000 feet above the river, I briefly dared to look up and see the people looking down on us as we whizzed passed at galloping speed into the next set of rapids. We were all soaked and at one point Trish was knocked off the raft wall into the well of the boat and was unable to get upright for a while due to all the boat movement but she came up grinning. In the afternoon we went down town and whilst Trish did her E-mail things at the library I had a look at the Prison Museum in the middle of town. It is a retired women's prison and is located next to a men's prison that is still in use. One of the group (Dick) has a son living in this state and has just rejoined us after paying him a visit for a few days. It would be nice to catch up with family as he did because we are sure missing ours.
