June 2 Carbondale - Chester (68mi)We set off for around 9.40am after a layover day we were well rested. We were late due to Trish loading the computer up but was having problems with it. Grant said one late good-by to us all as we set off, I feel quite sad for him but that did not last too long as soon it was raining on us and I thought lucky Grant Carbondale is close to Murphysboro so it seems like we where in suburbia for a long time this morning before we got into open country. The route took us along the Mississippi river levee bank for about 10 miles. Inside the levee the farmland is used to grow corn. The dark soil looks very rich as if it would grow anything in it. Before the levee was built the Mississippi would have often flooded this whole area. We past a Stockpile of coal in the afternoon where trains were being shunted for unloading. We crossed the rail line just a minute before a train passed by. Luckily otherwise we would have waited for half an hour I bet. Our journey is a quest to find a coffee shop but this morning it was a long way before we found one. We did pass one or two bars that seemed to be located in the middle of nowhere, I wondered who used them to drink in? This afternoon it rained heavily for some time and we reached camp tired cold and wet. One of the treats in this lifestyle is to enjoy a long hot shower unfortunately this was not the case tonight. Tepid showers in cold change rooms !
The sun never showed it's self at all. I don't think the temperature reached much more that 55'F today. A local shop owner told us it's about 30'F below normal for this time of year.
