May 30 Marion - Golconda (58mi)This is another milestone today, this morning we reach the Ohio river and as we cross it by ferry boat we pass over the state line into the third state Illinois. The ferry ride took about five minutes so it was obviously not a wide part of the river. We passed over the river at Cave in the Rock a one time hang out for Pirates who would ambush passing river boats and rob them.
Just inside the new state line we were lucky enough to see three dear run into the middle of the road and they stood there looking at us for what seemed a full two minutes - but not long enough to get the camera out and pointed at them. The land usage has now changed. The woods to the end of the roadway has given way to pasture land, I have even seen a few homes growing vegetables. Most of the homes are sitting on manicured lawns that reach right down to the edge of the road and one of the group commented that the average time spent by these house owners sitting on a lawnmower and mowing grass must be astronomical.
The road condition in the early part of our ride in the state is very poor. Flying down a hill at 35 miles an hour and dodging potholes is a skill that needs concentration if nothing else. |
