 Home Up

May 31 Golconda - Carbondale (60mi)

A strong headwind was with us most of today as well as the ever present hills, it was a tough ride. We consol ourselves knowing that we are on a Rest Day tomorrow.

We pass through Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge. To us it looks much the same as the rest of the wilderness we has passed through. A contradiction to the name of this area is that there are signs posted allowing HUNTING. The signs read "Public Hunting Allowed" - it conjures up an image of gun totting hunters taking pot shots at the public as they pass. Another sign says "No Vehicles beyond this Point" - the woods are so dense a person could not walk into them never mind drive a vehicle.

The motel we stayed in is in the middle of town. As we turned a corner we are suddenly back into the real world with high rise buildings and bill boards everywhere. The road in takes us past Illinois State University. They have a large Football Stadium right next door to the University but most strange is that they also have a Coal Fired Power Station in between the University and the Football Stadium. I wonder about pollution as the smoke stack is very low.

We all went along to an all you can eat buffet (Chinese) for our evening meal. Excellent food and a good bed - what more could you ask for.
