Trish & Phill's Tandem TransAmerican

Tour 2003

 Home Up

Jun 15 Larnard- Layover

Today is a rest day. This gives us the opportunity to visit the Santa Fe Visitor's Centre.

The Whole area is full of the rich history of this land and it's gateway into the western side of the country. From the earliest Indian, white man's progress with exploration and settlement and then the arrival of the train, It's all shown here at the Visitors Centre.

Actually the Centre is spelt Center if anyone is interested.  One of the interesting things I found looking through a recreated school was a note in the front of a 1009 year Kansas State school book, someone who had once owned it had inscribed  "Pity the thief, and petty the thief, who steels this book". Obviously they had a problem with people taking things even in those times.  They had built a sod house (a house made from earth an sods) to illustrate how pioneers lived and the room was so cool and comfortable.

We all usually eat at an "all you can eat Buffet" on Rest Days, but we did that last night, tonight the cooks made a nice meal at the Park - grilled Chicken and corn.

A couple of young guys - Brad and Tom from Kentucky have been running into us along the way. They are also riding the TransAm. We invited them to join us for dinner too, we have seen them in several camp sites so far.

We have started to meet riders who are riding across the USA from West to East but they have all been guys who have started in California, so missing the ride over the Rockies. The Rockies could still be under snow if the ride is started too early. When we meet these East bounder's there is an exchange of information on what to expect from the road over the next couple of days.

The front wheel of the Tandem is again a concern, the spokes are all loose. They are evenly loose so the wheel is still in true but the spokes are rubbing each other and making a noise, I am tempted to tighten each one a little but once you start messing with a wheel the ability to keep it round may be difficult. I will leave it until I get to a bike shop and they can place it in a jig to tighten it.
