 Home Up

May 24 Berea

A couple of the guys opted to stay in Motels for their stay in Berea. I'm just glad to be out of there.

I spoke to a guy in the Camp ground today. He was amongst other things instrumental in seeing the planting of 6 million trees throughout Kentucky. For such a noteworthy cause the Governor of Kentucky can award a person the title of Colonel.. He told me he serves the Governor at least once a year. This year he had waited table at the Kentucky Derby Horse Race held a couple of days ago. He had to have the white suit on and also the little goatee beard. He then told he "just like Colonel Sanders" (KFC fame) So the old guy with the secret herbs and spices wasn't a military man, another myth out the window !

Today we traveled by car up to Lexington Kentucky. Mick hired a car and has a shopping list of bits and pieces to buy for the group, break blocks are high on the list for most people. I latter cleaned the bike and oiled it again - I think that's the third time since we stopped here.

I was amazed to see the price of some bikes. A "Giant" full carbon fiber frame and includes seat post and bar stem for $1990 fitted with top of the range Shimano gear - that was so cheap compared to Australia. They also had a Recumbent in the shop on special for $790, I was tempted to buy it and send it home.

The (only) coffee shop in town tonight had a group on playing Blue Grass music. The Cafe has only been open a couple of months and the place was packed out. The potential for some business to provide entertainment in this town is very evident.
