May 28 White Mills - Utica (110 miles)Today we should have ridden one of the longest scheduled rides for the trip about 82 miles. Unfortunately around 10 o'clock in the morning we stopped at a coffee shop and when we came out we took the wrong direction. The indications on the map were correct , pass an unnamed road on the right and then a couple of miles later go over a river. Unfortunately both the road going south east and the road going north west had the same features. We ended up over 10 miles in the wrong direction before we realized the mistake. It really took the wind out of our sail to have to go and ride back along the road we had just traveled including so huge hills. At the end of the day we had cycled 110 miles.
One funny thing from the misery of the day was watching Trish ask a farmer in a field for directions. She wanted to confirm we were heading in the right direction The farmer could not understand a word she said even after she repeated herself 3 or 4 times He eventually asked her "are you from Germany or somewhere"?
Tonight there are two single beds available in the Fire Station we are staying in. Although it's usually first in best dressed the group let us have the two beds we needed them and were more than appreciative of there consideration. About half hour before reaching the station the rain started. By the time we went to bed there was a great thunder and lightning storm that lasted a couple of hours. We were very glad to be in a building this night and sleeping on a mattress too HEAVEN The time zones changed today we are now 13 hours behind Western Australian time. Another significant event was the fact that we are 1000 miles away from our start point. |
