Jul 20 Baker City - Layover DayIt was great to wake up without the alarm and just take our time, we decided we wouldn't do to much today we needed to get some serious rest. In the afternoon we strolled into the town of Baker City centre. The festivities were still going on, we watched a group of folks square dancing they were dressed up in the cowboy/girl wear and they did a really good job of entertaining themselves as well as us. The guy who was "calling" the dance sounded more like Burl Ives than Burl Ives does or did as he's probably dead long ago now? He had a good voice and doe see doe'd the group very harmoniously. I have slowly noticed that the Western States are not so fond of displaying the stars and strips flag as the Eastern States are. There are far fewer flags on display, having said that there are still lots of flags and car stickers but nowhere near the outward display of patriotism I'm sure they are of course but it's just not so obvious. The town Library was open today on a Sunday. They had a great book sale on but as hard as it was for me I did not buy anything due to the weight thing pity. We went to bed early to get a good night sleep and set off early. At 02.49 AM that plan went out the window. The motel fire alarm went off. We got out of bed and went to see what was happening but very few of the residents had bothered to get up. A Fire Truck arrived and a couple of Fire Fighters came into the building. They seemed to know before they got there that it was a false alarm. The Alarm bell must of sounded for 15 - 20 minutes until the load screech was switched off. We did not get back to sleep after that. |
