May 14th Mallard Duck - Camp Baffle 52miThis morning I fitted the inner-tube borrowed from Larry to the front wheel . I am still concerned about riding the bike down hill at speed. We are taking things very cautiously. Obviously the slower progress is now also a concern for us, but by mid-day we a basically back to normal speed down hills. The group typically gather for a second breakfast each morning at a convenient coffee stop. It gives us a chance to compare what the ride has revealed so far and what lies in front of us for the day. Strong riders are typically last to leave camp each morning and have caught up to us by morning tea. We are one of the first to leave camp each morning. These hills are really hurting us. The land is now showing a lot more signs of cultivation, wheat and corn is common along the road. Dairy farms are common. One would expect to see something of Pigs (or Hogs as they are know here). After all the famous Virginia Ham comes from these parts doesn't it? However I have not seen any sign of them yet. Every night subconsciously I find I'm singing John Denver's - "West Virginia - Country Road take me home". I wish I knew the word to the song. I'll look it up when I get home.
The last few miles into Camp Baffle (a Christian Youth Camp) followed a river. The ride was wonderful, so pretty. There where lots of little wild flowers in the field too.
Camp Baffle had nice warm showers and we both slept well due to a fairly chilly night. |
