Trish & Phill's Tandem TransAmerican

Tour 2003

 Home Up

May 8 Glendale -Ashland Virginia

The weather has been kind so far. Each morning there is a heavy mist that clears by 9 o'clock or so, the temperate is around mid 70's so it is pleasant to ride in this weather. We have had a little rain along the way but nothing to worry about.

Until now we have maintained this journal in the third person, but that sucks so we are abandoning that idea.

Phill- one of the things I had not anticipated was the problem of using these maps, they have to be used in conjunction with the text at the side of the map.

We have taken a few wrong turns already but today we followed a road sign number and found ourselves going down the hard shoulder of a four lane highway. We would have made the TV show   (Poor Road Users and Fools). We stopped about 2 miles down the road and had to push the machine across the roadway median as there was no turning around for miles to come. HIGHLY STRESSFUL.

Its our turn to cook for the group tonight. It could be described as amusing to have been with us at the grocery store. The things Trish wanted to use in the meal were difficult to find, or the assistants could not find or knew of them. There is also the problem of these guys talking a funny language, they don't seem to understand us too well.

We ended up eating a nice curry and rice. We are eating along the way on our bike with goodies stuffed into every possible pocket hole and crevice we have. My excuses is that we need the energy but we haven't really ridden to far so far.

Tonight we stayed in a Caravan Park with lots of RV's. They a huge campervans with luxury appointments. Strongly most of the number plates have Virginian number plates that tell me some of them don't move too far away from home.

Trish logged on to the internet at the Park at 10 to 8 but got kicked out of the at 8 so we are running a bit behind with keeping this up to date.
